The Short Answer
Most loading docks use a 12,000–16,000 kg (25,000–35,000 lb) capacity leveler. The rule of thumb: the leveler must support your forklift's own weight plus its heaviest load, with a safety margin.
How to Calculate It
Add the forklift's service weight to its rated load capacity. For example, a 5-tonne forklift carrying a 4-tonne pallet exerts roughly 9 tonnes on the leveler — within a 12 t leveler's range with margin. REDA standard dock levelers are rated 12, 14, and 16 t (metric) and 25,000, 30,000, and 35,000 lb (imperial).

Other Factors
Also match the platform size to your widest trailer (REDA offers 1800×2000 up to 2000×2500 mm, and 6′×6′ up to 7′×8′ imperial), and confirm the pit depth. When in doubt, size up — a higher-capacity leveler costs slightly more but adds years of headroom.
